Some experts recommend that breastfeeding mothers need an additional 500 calories in their diets. Recent research has shown that this may not be required. The important thing for breastfeeding and dieting women is that they get enough of the food groups and the essential nutrients to support both their baby and themselves. A woman should be able to eat a normal calorie diet and successfully breastfeed at the same time as she loses weight.

Fluid Intake For Breastfeeding And Dieting

For both breastfeeding and dieting a woman needs to make sure she is getting enough fluids. A woman who does not take in enough fluids will not be able to make breast milk and will not be able to burn the fat to lose weight effectively. A breastfeeding woman needs to drink both water and milk for the best success in these areas.

Avoid Rapid Weight Loss

It is well known that rapid weight loss is not the best way to lose weight and this is especially true with breastfeeding and dieting. When a person loses weight too fast they are usually losing muscle and tissue rather than fat. The loss of these tissues will cause a build up of toxins in the dieter and in the case of a nursing mother these toxins may be secreted in the breast milk causing harm to the baby. A breastfeeding and dieting mother should try to only lose one to two pounds a week. This may not seem like a lot of weight but over a couple of months most women will see all the extra pregnancy weight disappear.

Seek Advice

The most imperative thing for a breastfeeding and dieting woman is to seek out the advice of her medical practitioner and the baby’s paediatrician. Each mom and baby has personal requirements and a GP id the best person to identify these needs and suggest the best possible options for addressing the needs. What is most vital for the mom and baby is that together, they get all the sustenance needed to provide for the most important period in their lives.

Some Sobering Statistics On Alcohol And Dieting

A beer Belly is nothing to be laughed at, even the recent ad campaign “belly’s gonna getya” is not at all funny when you consider the fatel and dire consequences of alcohol on dieting.

There is however, a new take on the issue and research on using artificial sweeteners in mixed drinks demonstrates that it may not help with dieting, but it probably will make a person feel drunk quicker.

Based on studies, the stomach contents of drinks mixed with artificial sweeteners were emptied in about 15 minutes. Those mixed with sugar took just over 21 minutes and showed the blood-alcohol concentration was higher in persons drinking drinks made with artificial sweeteners than those whose drinks were mixed with sugar. While studies of alcohol and dieting are relatively new, the inclusion of calories in alcohol is well documented.

One of the more popular light beers, for example has 109 calories per 12-ounce serving while the calories in a regular beer averages about 145. When considering alcohol and dieting, a four ounce glass of wine will average about 100 calories and an ounce of hard liquor will harbor over 100 calories.

Some additives to mixed drinks add significantly to the calories count such as Tequila Sunrise, which will have 200 calories in five ounces where a jigger of tequila will have 115 and a four ounce whiskey sour will have 170, compared to a jigger of 100 proof whiskey at 125 calories.

Alcohol May Boost Diet Motivation

In theory, with the caloric content known for alcoholic products, alcohol and dieting are not consistent with weight loss. While there is no real harm in limited alcohol intake while dieting, and it has been known to affect a person’s motivation to lose weight, or to increase their acceptance of their current weight, moderation is alcohol intake is strongly recommended.

Mixing alcohol with diet drinks may be lower in calories, and with the increase in time in which it enters the blood stream, it may reduce the number of drinks being consumed. This mixture of alcohol and dieting may keep a person from overindulging, helping to reduce the number of calories taken in through the alcohol.

If you  are going to mix your alcohol and dieting objectives,then you should think about the fact that the calories in the beverage should be included in your daily caloric intake, as part of their diet plan. By keeping the calorie count down to the level indicated by their diet, moderately consuming alcohol should not disrupt the diet plans. However, excess alcohol can lead to excess calories which not replace food as the primary source.

Cabbage Soup for Dieting – Beyond Day 7

If you’ve been interested in health and fitness for any length of time you have most certainly heard of the cabbage soup diet. However, its nothing new and that’s the surprising news.  In fact the cabbage soup fro dieting has been around for years. Decades ago dieters were attesting to the fact that they were shedding the fat with a cabbage soup for dieting.

 
These days there are even cabbage soup diet pills on the market, although I can’t see for the life of me why anyone in their right mind would want to swallow a cabbage soup for dieting pill. Although its been around the block a few times the idea behind the cabbage soup for dieting is the same as it has always been.

 
The cabbage soup diet is pretty restrictive but it does show results and is often recommended by doctors for patients who are going to undergo heart surgery or something similar when they need to lose weight fast. The premise of the diet is that the cabbage soup made of lots of vegetables and water will fill you up and help detox your body by flushing all the fats out. In addition to the unlimited amounts of soup you can have, each day is limited to just a few other things.

 
Sample Days

 
For instance, day one is unlimited soup plus all the vegetables you can eat (apart from a few starchy ones like peas and corn). Day two is soup again plus all the fruits you can eat except for a few like bananas and mangoes. Day three is soup plus frits and vegetables. Day four is soup plus skim milk and bananas. Day five is when you can introduce a little grilled meat and some brown rice and so on. Tea, coffee and pop are not allowed on the cabbage soup diet and exercise is recommended though not mandatory.

 
Maintenance Phase

 
Experts recommend that people not go on this diet for too long a period at a stretch because it could rid your body of essential nutrients. However, it has been considered relatively safe for a week or so and does bring about results. Nevertheless, while on the cabbage soup diet, don’t forget all about it as soon day 7 is over; this may result in a downward spiral leaving you back at square one.

 
Even if you don’t follow the cabbage sop diet strictly after the first seven days, do make the soup part of your daily meals. Have it before your meal; it will fill you up on minimum calories leaving you with not much room to overindulge in the actual meal. Don’t forget the fruits and veggies either; having a variety of different colored produce and leafy vegetables can always help you reach your weight loss goals.

 
Here are Your Ingredients for Cabbage Diet Recipe: 
 ·        6 Large, Green Onions
·        2 Green Peppers 
·        1 head - white cabbage
·        2 Cans Chopped Tomatoes 
·        Few sticks of Celery 
·        1 Package Onion Soups Mix 
·        1-2 Cubes of stock (chicken, beef or vegetable)
·        Carrots - sliced 
·        Mushrooms (if desired)   
Chop all the vegetables into small pieces and then simply cover with them water. 
Boil these ingredients quickly for about 10 minutes.
Reduce to simmer and continue cooking until vegetables are tender. Season to taste with salt, pepper, parsley, etc to taste. 
The secret is that you can consume as much of the cabbage soup diet recipe as you want, whenever you want, at any time of the day.

This may sound like too slow a weight loss program, but it is something that is achievable by simple changes to your lifestyle and can be categorized as a safe diet. Losing 6 pounds a week may sound great but it is difficult to maintain and sometimes the pounds pile on again.

A simple way to lose a pound a week is to burn 500 calories a day. You can do this by eating 250 calories less and burning 250 calories on an exercise machine. 500 calories multiplied by 7 days in a week is equal to 3500 calories that is one pound. Just saying no to extra cheese and biggie size options alone can save you 250 calories and brisk walking on the treadmill for around 40 minutes at around 3.5 miles an hour can expend 250 calories.

It may sound like a lot of numbers, but the math in this safe diet is very simple.

No Scams

Another aspect of safe dieting is not to fall for gimmicks with pills, powders and patches not approved by the FDA. So many advertising dollars are spent online, on TV and in print about how a miracle pill can make you shrink 10 dress sizes or how you can look good in a bikini in just one week! Don’t be tempted by taking these short cuts; they just may land you in the hospital. So many people have heard about the complications that ephedra-based products had and many lawsuits have been filed against other such ‘doctor-recommended’ safe diets. The people in the advertisements aren’t even really doctors as the fine print often states and the side effects can greatly outweigh the short term benefits.

Be inspired by celebrities like Kirstie Alley and now Ricki Lake who have lost tremendous amounts of weight by diet and exercise as opposed to a fad diet that is in fashion one day and out the window the next.

Do you realise that dieting is not just about loosing weight. Contrary to modern, popular beliefs, diets are undertaken for a variety of reasons.

Whatever the reason for the diet, a diet is essentially an eating plan, undertaken to achieve the specific requirements of the dieter. Of course the plan is carried forward in a healthy and safe way. Yes! We all know that this is not always the case, hence the basis for dieting carrying such a poor reputation.

There are a number of times when we need to adjust our intake of food, either in quantity or quality. Such a time is when a woman is pregnant or even if she is planning to become pregnant.

When a woman plans to get pregnant or discovers she is pregnant she needs to change bad eating habits and develop a healthy diet while pregnant.  The woman needs to understand the basic needs of her body and that of the unborn child and the foods that will best meet those needs.  During pregnancy a woman should not be focused on weight loss but she needs to be focused on maintaining healthy nutrition. 

Caloric Intake For Dieting While Pregnant

The old adage that a pregnant woman is eating for two is not quite correct.  The nutritional requirements for the unborn child are not for a lot of calories but are for highly nutritious foods.  Most women only need to increase their caloric intake by about 300 calories for the growth and development of the baby.  There are some high-risk pregnancies that will require different nutritional amounts such as extremely obese women, teen mothers, underweight women and women with medical conditions such as diabetes.  These women will need to be closely monitored by their physician and may even want to see a registered dietician for nutritional counselling and advice on dieting while pregnant.

Nutritious Dieting While Pregnant

For good nutrition a pregnant woman will want to be sure to include certain foods in her diet and will, also, want to avoid certain foods.  The woman will need to increase her protein intake significantly. 

To do this she can eat one or two extra servings daily of lean read meat, poultry, lamb or pork, eggs, or a combination of beans and rice.  She will also need to make sure and eat enough fruits and vegetables.  One way to do this is to use these foods as snacks during the day. 

Raw carrots and other vegetables are great to munch on and provide key vitamins for the growth and development of the child.  Of course, a woman also needs to increase her milk intake and make sure and eat enough whole grain foods. 

A woman should avoid eating foods that are high in calorie but have little nutritional value.  Dieting while pregnant must be focused on eating foods that are high in nutritional value. This focus will enable to child to develop normally and will improve the mother’s health while she is pregnant and leading up to the birth and breastfeeding of the infant.

There are a significant number of people that, are basically living in denial when it comes to loosing weight through controling the intake of food. They are under the delusion that there is a quick, simple and miricle cure for their wieght problem. In reality however, the sooner that they take on board the notion that what is really required is a lifestyle change then the better off they will be.

The human body is not made to lose weight.  Weight loss in a human body signals the body to think there is a health or starvation issue and the body resists the weight loss in any way possible.  This is simply the survival mechanisms in the body working correctly.  A person can think of all the people, over the ages, which have perished because of disease and famine.  People who are alive in this age are the result of the strength of their ancestors and their genes.  So when the body perceives a starvation or disease threat it kicks into survival mode. 

Some people who are struggling with this issue and finding it hard to lose weight will turn to laxitives for dieting.   The belief is that the food that is eaten will not have time to be completely absorbed because the laxitive for dieting will stimulate the intestinal tract to dump the food.  People who use laxitives for dieting believe that they can eat essentially anything and the laxative will cause the food to be eliminated before the calories can be absorbed.  This is not only a faulty way of thinking but is a very dangerous approach to dieting.  

The Dangers Of Laxitives For Dieting

There are several dangers in using laxitives for dieting.  The first thing to understand is that the laxative works on the large intestine or colon to cause elimination of body waste.  When a person eats, the food will spend several hours in the stomach being broken down and then will continue into the small intestine where the nutrients will be absorbed into the body including the caloric content. 

When the food reaches the large intestine all that is left is usually indigestible fiber and water.  The water is then gradually absorbed and the fiber is eliminated.  The first danger to understand in using laxatives for dieting is that a person’s fluid balance can be completely disrupted.  Using laxitives for dieting may cause dehydration, fluid and electrolyte imbalance and death.  The weight loss that will occur will not be a loss of fat but a loss of fluid.

Another problem with using laxitives for dieting is that it can damage the colon.  With the repeated use of the laxative the colon will stop functioning normally and will be unable to work without a laxative or medical intervention. 

Because of the frequent loose bowel movements another problem may be that the sphincters in the anal region will lose their ability to function and a person can become incontinent of bowel which is an embarrassing and horrible condition to deal with.

Laxitives for dieting are not a smart idea.  They are not helpful in true healthy weight loss and will most likely cause several complications with repeated use.  They can even lead to death.
